In our society there is a constant pressure for ‘more’. More money, more material possessions, more fun, more life experiences; the list is endless. As many of us eventually realise, ‘more’ doesn’t make you any happier or fulfilled.
So why would business owners want to constantly strive for more? Isn’t this also a recipe for unhappiness?
Not necessarily. I believe it comes back to your motivation.
In the early days of your business career, ‘more’ was probably a good thing; especially if your revenues or personal earnings were not enough to meet you and your family’s needs.
However, as businesses and careers progress, successful advisers often find a new motivation; a goal bigger than money.
Clearly your bigger motivation is personal, but some I’ve seen that are very powerful include:
- Helping others (good advice makes a difference)
- Improving the local community (via good advice and employing local people)
- Seeing how good you and your business can become (exploring the limits of ones potential)
- Having fun (just for the heck of it)
The result of this motivational shift is often more fulfilment and an exciting latter portion of a persons career. The growth challenge becomes a meaningful and engaging game, not an endless pursuit of more.
